What counts as a small move?
By a small move we mean any load that does not fill a whole home, for example:
- A room in shared or bachelor housing: a bed, a small wardrobe, a mini fridge and a few boxes of clothes.
- A studio or one-bedroom flat: a bedroom set, a sofa and basic kitchen appliances.
- University students: moving between campus housing and a flat, or back to the family home for the holidays.
- Specific items: a second-hand fridge, washer or sofa you have bought, or a few pieces from your parents' home to yours.
These jobs do not need a big truck or a large crew, but they still need the same care in carrying and wrapping.
What we need to know
| Information | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A list or photos of the items | Sets the vehicle size and number of movers |
| Floor and lift at both ends | A fourth floor with no lift is very different from the ground floor |
| Anything needing dismantling? | A bed or wardrobe needs a carpenter |
| Distance | Same district or between two cities |
| Date and flexibility | Flexibility makes it easier to fit your move in |
The more precise the details, the clearer the quote, and the less likely anything changes on the day.
Bachelor and shared housing
Shared housing often has narrow corridors, busy stairs and sometimes no lift. Pack your things into closed boxes and bags before we arrive, take apart anything simple you can, and tell housemates the moving time so the corridor is clear. If you have a bed or wardrobe that needs dismantling, we do it and label the parts for reassembly. See furniture assembly for details.
Moving just one or two items
If the load is just a fridge, washer or sofa, what matters most is how it is carried and secured. The fridge travels upright once emptied, the washer drum is secured where possible, and the sofa is wrapped and lifted from its frame. See appliance movers and sofa movers, and if it is a whole bedroom set, bedroom set movers is the better page.
Should I pack myself to save money?
On a small move you can save time and cost by preparing your own boxes: clothes in bags, books in small boxes, tools and odds and ends in labelled containers. We take care of appliances, glass and large items, plus dismantling and assembly. Do not leave valuables or official papers inside boxes; keep them with you.
Common small-move mistakes
- Underestimating the load: a few things can turn out to be a bed, a wardrobe, a fridge and twenty boxes. Photos show the real picture.
- Forgetting the stairs: one fridge on a fourth floor with no lift needs at least two people and the right carrying technique.
- Leaving drawers full: a loaded wardrobe or bedside table is heavy and drawers can slide open on the way.
- Laying appliances flat: fridges in particular are best moved upright.
- A tight deadline: leaving the move until the day before handover puts you under pressure if anything slips.
