Why wardrobes need special handling
Many modern wardrobes are made of MDF or particle board. They are solid when assembled but weaken if carried tilted or dragged in one piece. That is why we move most wardrobes dismantled:
- An assembled wardrobe may not fit through the room door, the lift or a stair landing.
- Carrying it whole strains the hinges and joints, so it wobbles after reassembly.
- Doors and mirrors are the parts most likely to break in transit.
Wardrobe types and how we move each
| Type | What we do |
|---|---|
| Hinged-door wardrobe | Remove doors and hinges, break the carcass into panels, label each panel |
| Sliding-door wardrobe | Lift doors out of the track, wrap them separately, protect the rails from bending |
| Mirrored doors | Wrap mirrors in cartons with foam corners and transport upright |
| Flat-pack wardrobe | Careful dismantling – screw holes weaken each time |
| Metal cabinet | Empty, secure drawers and doors, dismantle if needed |
| Built-in wardrobe | Usually part of the property; we assess from photos whether removal is possible |
After assembly: aligning the doors
The most common complaint after a wardrobe move is doors that no longer close straight. The cause is usually an uneven floor in the new room or hinges that need adjusting. After assembly we level the unit and adjust hinges until the doors close properly, then check drawers and handles. If the wardrobe was originally fixed to the wall with a safety bracket, we tell you before assembly what the new spot will need.
One wardrobe or the whole house?
Moving a single wardrobe – bought second-hand, moved to another room, or taken to a son’s new flat – is a partial move we can arrange with a suitable vehicle; see also used furniture pickup. If the wardrobes are part of full bedroom sets, bedroom set movers covers the whole set, and children’s rooms are on kids’ room movers.
What to do before the crew arrives
- Empty the clothes; hanging items can go into garment bags or cartons.
- Take out small drawers and bag their contents.
- Photograph the wardrobe from the front and side, including keys and accessories.
- Measure the space in the new room if it is tight.
