Scope of this page: how to estimate your home's load so you understand the truck you need. To prepare the home itself read the moving preparation checklist, and for what changes the cost see moving costs in the Eastern Province.
"Which truck do I need?" starts with an inventory, not a size
Many people ask about the truck size before they know what they will move. It is more accurate to start with a count of the home: how many furnished rooms, which large pieces and how many boxes you will need. Then we can tell you whether one trip is enough or whether you need a bigger truck or more than one trip. We do not give a fixed size for every two-bedroom flat, because two homes with the same number of rooms can hold very different amounts of furniture.
Three numbers are enough for a first estimate
- Furnished rooms: how many bedrooms, majlis, living rooms and kitchens actually contain furniture?
- Large pieces: beds, wardrobes, sofas, fridge, washing machine and bookcases. Write an approximate count of each.
- Boxes: clothes, kitchenware, books and miscellaneous items. Guess the number if you have to.
Send those numbers with a photo of every room and we will tell you the truck and crew you need.
What adds to the load without you noticing?
What people forget is usually in the balcony, the storeroom, the annex and the roof, plus wrapped upholstery, small appliances, rugs and wall hangings. Add them to your list before you call; forgetting them is the most common reason the load changes on the day. Use the moving inventory list to go room by room.
Why we do not set the size by phone alone
A survey by photo or visit can reveal what a description cannot: the length of a sofa, the width of a wardrobe and how many pieces cannot be dismantled. That changes the truck and the crew. A bigger truck is not always easier either; it may not fit a narrow street or stop near the entrance, in which case a smaller truck with more than one trip can be the better plan. We discuss that once we know both addresses.
Before you book
Prepare your three numbers, room photos, both addresses, the floor, the elevator and where the truck can stop. For a small move see small moves, and for a big household see large family moving. Remember that the time of the move depends on the load, as explained in how long does a move take.
