Rug and Carpet Moving: Wrapping and Transporting Rugs Safely

If you have large majlis rugs, handmade rugs of value, or many room rugs and you want them to arrive as they left. Rugs usually move as part of a full home move, but they are prepared differently from furniture. For packing in general see furniture packing, and for majlis seating see majlis furniture movers.

Why we roll rugs instead of folding them

Folding leaves visible lines and can crack fibers or the backing under pressure and heat inside a truck. Rolling spreads the pressure and protects the pile. So:

• We roll from one end to the other, pile facing inward for most types.
• We tie each roll gently in several places so it does not unroll.
• We cover the roll with a clean wrap against dust and rubbing.
• We load rolls flat on level surfaces with no appliances or heavy items on top.

Types of rugs and how we handle them

Handmade and valuable rugs

Rolled carefully with an extra protective layer and loaded away from wooden furniture and appliances. If a piece has special value, tell us before the day so we treat it like luxury furniture and antiques.

Large majlis rugs

Usually long and heavy, they need two or more people to roll and carry and enough floor space to lay them flat before rolling. We handle them after the majlis seating has been moved out.

Room rugs and runners

Lighter; several small pieces can be rolled together with the room name written on the roll.

Fitted wall-to-wall carpet

We do not lift or install fitted carpet; that is a job for a flooring specialist.

Before the move: what to do yourself

• If you want rugs washed, do it well before the move so they dry completely; a damp rolled rug can smell or grow mold. We do not offer rug washing.
• Photograph valuable handmade rugs before the move.
• Decide where each rug goes in the new home.

Rugs in storage

For storage, rugs must be clean and fully dry, wrapped in a cover that lets them breathe as much as possible, and kept flat away from humidity. See furniture storage for temporary storage details.

Do rugs change the price?

Rugs are usually part of the full move and are counted in the load volume and packing. Very large or numerous rugs can add rolling and wrapping time. See our moving cost guide and send the number and approximate sizes of your rugs with photos of the rest of your furniture.
