Why summer is a special season for moving
Summer is when most people in the Eastern Province move house: the school year ends, leases are renewed and job transfers happen before the new year. It is also the hardest season for furniture. Midday temperatures are very high, coastal humidity is heavy in Dammam, Khobar, Qatif and Jubail, and Al-Ahsa, while drier, is intensely hot. This page sums up what we have learned about moving in these conditions.
Timing: start early
The biggest decision in a summer move is the start time. We usually prefer loading to begin early in the morning so most of the heavy lifting is done before midday. Sometimes the evening is better, especially when unloading at a house with no shade or an open yard. What we avoid wherever possible is leaving wrapped items standing in the street or yard in direct sun for long.
| Time slot | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Most moves | The best choice for large homes |
| Midday | Indoor work only (dismantling, packing) | We keep loading in direct sun to a minimum |
| Late afternoon and evening | Short moves within the city | Check that your building allows evening moves |
Things that should not ride in the truck
Even in a closed truck, summer heat inside the box is high. We recommend carrying these in your air-conditioned car or keeping them with you:
- Medication, especially anything that needs a set storage temperature.
- Candles, cosmetics and perfumes.
- Aerosols and pressurised cans; these should not go with the furniture at all.
- Battery devices such as laptops, phones and cameras.
- Old photos and important documents.
- House plants.
Wrapping furniture in heat and humidity
Leather: plastic is not left tight against leather for long in the heat, since trapped warmth can mark it; a blanket or cloth cover goes on first. Wood and MDF: high humidity affects surfaces and edges, so they are wrapped well and kept outside as briefly as possible. Mattresses: sealed bags against dust and moisture. Appliances: unplugged early, and the fridge emptied and dried thoroughly, because trapped moisture in the heat causes odours. More on our furniture packing services page.
Book before the end-of-school rush
The weeks after the school year ends are among the busiest. If you know you will move in summer, contact us early and fix the date. If your move is tied to a lease ending, our end-of-lease moving guide helps you plan the handover.
After arrival: do not switch everything on at once
- Leave the fridge standing for a while before switching it on.
- Run the AC in the new home before the furniture arrives if you can, so boxes are not opened in a very hot room.
- Unwrap leather sofas and wooden pieces first so they can breathe.
- Test electronics once they have cooled down indoors.
Summer and long-distance moves
On long routes from the Eastern Province to Riyadh, the Hijaz or the north in summer, heat on the road is an extra factor, so we pay more attention to sensitive items and avoid leaving the truck parked in the sun for long stretches. See our intercity movers page. If summer and Ramadan overlap, also read moving during Ramadan.
Note: we do not remove or install AC units; book a technician before moving day.
