Three options depending on the job
| Renovation type | Best option | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| One or two rooms (paint, floors) | Move within the house | Dismantle and wrap the room's furniture, move it to another room or the majlis, and return it afterwards |
| Most of the house, family staying with relatives | Temporary storage | Move everything out, wrap and store it, then return and reassemble after the works |
| Long renovation, family renting a temporary home | Move to temporary housing | Move what the family needs to the temporary home, store the rest, and bring it all back afterwards |
The right choice depends on duration and affected rooms. Send us the contractor's schedule if you have one and we will suggest the best fit.
Why not just cover the furniture in place?
- Dust: plaster and tile dust gets under simple covers into fabric, electronics and drawers.
- Paint: overspray and drips can ruin wood and sofas.
- Workers and equipment: ladders and tools in a furnished room raise the risk of scratches and breakage.
- Contractor delays: many contractors need rooms completely empty, and moving furniture every day slows the job.
Two key dates, both tied to the contractor
- Move-out date: a day or two before works start, so the contractor gets an empty house.
- Move-back date: after the dirty work (plaster, tiling, painting) and a full clean. Do not bring furniture back before paint is dry and the house is cleaned.
Contractors do run late, so we agree a provisional return date that can move with advance notice. If your furniture is in storage, it stays there until the house is genuinely ready.
Packing for storage and the return trip
- Sofas and mattresses in sealed plastic bags against dust and damp.
- Wood and glass surfaces with protective layers and corner guards.
- Bedrooms and wardrobes dismantled, numbered, with screws in labelled bags so reassembly is easy weeks later.
- Boxes marked with room and contents, and counted at move-out and move-back.
See furniture storage and furniture packing for details.
Kitchen and appliances
If the kitchen is being redone, we empty and pack its contents and appliances. Whether the cabinets themselves can be dismantled depends on their condition and whether they will be refitted; we assess that from photos first. Plumbing and gas disconnection is for a qualified technician before move-out day. The fridge is emptied and dried before storage and the washer disconnected in advance.
This page is for renovating and staying in the same home. If you are moving permanently, see residential movers; in Dammam specifically see local movers in Dammam.
What to keep with you during the works
- Family clothing for the whole renovation, allowing for weather changes on long jobs.
- Official papers, jewellery, laptops and chargers.
- Medicines, children's daily items and school books.
- Basic kitchen items you may need in temporary housing.
These "do not store" boxes are set aside, or taken straight to your temporary home if that is part of the plan. Everything that goes into storage is recorded on a list you keep, so you know where everything is.
