Scope of this page: preparing chandeliers, curtains and hanging lighting for a move. For the full picture see moving preparation checklist and moving inventory list, and for glassware packing glassware and crystal.
Why these items in particular?
Chandeliers have small glass or crystal parts, wires and thin arms, while heavy curtains and velvet crease and pick up dirt easily. So they should not be thrown into a box with other things; they need separate wrapping and a fixed place in the truck.
Chandeliers: who dismantles and what we handle
Disconnecting a chandelier from the power and taking it off the ceiling is electrical work, and it is best done by an electrician or the person who installed it. After that we handle wrapping the parts, packing, transporting and unloading with care. We suggest photographing the chandelier before it comes down and bagging small parts with numbers to ease reassembly.
Curtains and soft furnishings
Heavy curtains should be folded rather than crushed, delicate ones kept in clean covers, and rods and rings bagged and numbered. We place them in the truck on top of solid items or to the side so heavy furniture does not press on them.
Unloading and reinstallation
On arrival we place the boxes in the intended rooms. Reinstalling electrical chandeliers also needs a specialist. If you want us to coordinate the timing with an electrician, tell us. See also glass tables and mirrors.
